After the Olympians overthrew the Titans, they spared Prometheus and Epimethus from enslavement in Tartarus because they sided and aided the gods. So after the war, Zues assigned them with an important task. They were designated to be in charged of filling the planet with life. They gave animals certain characteristics like strength and endurance and created them with special forms including wings and some with hard covered shells.
When it came to creating humans, Epimetheus did not know what characteristics to assign to them to protect themselves and to be be able to stand on their own. For assistance in this process, Epimetheus called upon his brother, Prometheus, to help give man their special qualities. As a result, Epimetheus gave man fire which allowed them to help build crafts and protect and defend themselves. In addition, he gave them the ability to stand on two legs like the gods.
When the time came to set up sacrifices to the gods, Prometheus had a little trick up his sleeve. Prometheus loved humans more than Olympians, so he decided to trick Zues. He made two piles for Zues to choose from. One pile was composed with fat and bones and the other pile was composed of good meat hidden inside. Zues chose the fat and bones, but he shortly realized that he had been tricked. This made him extremely angry. To get back at Zues, he therefore takes fire away from man. He did this because he could not do anything else because he was bound by the terms. As a result, Prometheus is not happy with Zues' action against the humans, removing fire from them. Therefore, Prometheus takes matters upon himself and lights a torch from the sun and gave fire back to mankind. When Zues discovers what Prometheus has done, he retaliates against mankind and Prometheus by creating Pandora, the first women ever made. She was intended to punish mankind and the rest of the women who came after her were suppose to do the same. Pandora was given a jar that contained all the evils of the world. Zues created Pandora with a curious nature. Although she was instructed not to open the jar because all the evils would come out of it and harm mankind, Zues knew her curiosity would overcome here and she would eventually open the jar.
Zues gave her to Epimethus because he knew Epimethus could not resist taking her regardless of warnings from his brother not to take any gifts from the gods. Epimethus took Pandora and Pandora opened her jar, as Zues predicted she would, and all the horrors of the world came out of it. The only good thing that also emerged was hope. Ultimately, Prometheus's punishment for stealing fire back, giving it to the humans, and tricking Zues was he was chained in the Caucagus Mountains. While in chains, he was exposed to an eagle who would come and tear at at his liver. In order to be saved, an immortal needed to die for him (which Chiron the centaur did) and a hero needed to kill the eagle to free him (which Heracles did) (www.greekmythology.com).
